NRMA CareFlight's integrated safety management system brings under the one system a documented and auditable response to aviation, medical and occupational risks, hazards, incidents and accidents. Coupled with our involvement in the Aviation Safety Network (ASN), this means that we have a robust and leading edge safety management system.
All CareFlight crew are required to participate in a rigorous Training Program before undertaking missions, to ensure that operations are carried out safely. Crew members are also required to practise their skills on a regular basis to keep currency.
Maintenance support for our helicopter fleet is an essential component of the safe delivery of our services. The 24 hour, 365 days per year nature of our HEMS operations places high demands on the engineering department. We are fortunate to have a very experienced and dedicated engineering team who continue to make a vital contribution to the safety, efficiency and reliability of our services.
Our web-based Helipad Directory has contributed to the safety of HEMS operations, with nine other HEMS operators across Australia now actively using the site which ensures that the information about landing sites is as up to date as possible.
An important project which will enhance the safety of our night operations is the use of Night Vision Goggle technology. Night Vision Goggles (NVG) have been used by the military for more than 20 years, and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has recently granted approval to NRMA CareFlight to fly night operations using NVG. We are currently training our crews in the use of this technology and expect to commence NVG-assisted night operations shortly.
