February saw the annual Sussex Inlet Choppers for Charity weekend held on the beautiful South Coast of NSW.
The event started in 2001 as Harley’s for Helicopters at the instigation of Rex Williams as a means of attracting visitors to the region after the rush of the Christmas season. Each year the event has expanded and it is now the biggest weekend for Sussex Inlet. This year was no exception and, with the 40th anniversary celebrations for the RSL Club happening at the same time, it made for a big and busy weekend.
The weekend commenced in the usual way with the barefoot bowls event staged at the RSL Club bowling facility, with over 40 participants. Approximately half of these were bowlers and a very enjoyable time was had with the coaching - much laughter was heard on the bowling green. The RSL Bowling Club ensured that the occasion was fun with many small prizes for happenings on and off the green. Congratulations to the organisers of this event.
Saturday saw the golf day with over 70 players. This was organised by the Sussex Inlet Golf Club with their usual efficiency and all participants had a great time. At the conclusion of the day, tales were exhanged and doubtful shots were discussed. Thanks to the Golf Club for a very well run day.
On Saturday night over 200 people attended the dinner dance and an excellent night was had, especially by those who fronted up after the disco on Friday night. The band had many people up on the dance floor and people queued up to participate in the fundraising for CareFlight.
The weekend ended with the street parade and market stalls. Despite a drizzly start to Sunday, the day turned out fine and sunny. The street parade was very successful - bikes, cars, the Men’s Shed mobile “Dunny”, Nippers and various other groups participated.
Fifty stalls managed to squeeze into the available space and with the record crowd, did good business. It was pleasing to see local charity groups in attendance to promote their various activities. The CareFlight helicopter proved to be the usual popular attraction and was opened up so people could have a close inspection.
Radio 2ST broadcast from the event, interviewing many local personalities and supporters, including pilot John Hoad who flew the CareFlight helicopter to the event.
A HUGE thank you to the dedicated committee of volunteers who have been working all year round to plan and organise this wonderful event. Your dedication and enthusiasm ensured a very successful event for CareFlight and Sussex Inlet.
Thanks also to all the volunteers who helped at the events and to everyone who bought raffle tickets, made donations, marched in the parade, played golf and bowls, attended the dinner dance or participated in any other way. You're a wonderful community and we are very grateful for all your support. Looking forward to 2012.
