For the third year in a row residents from Wollondilly, Wingecarribee and Macarthur Shires gathered at the Tahmoor Sports Ground to experience a fun-filled community day, and at the same time raise money to assist NRMA CareFlight with their life-saving work.
The Tahmoor Community CareFlight Day went ahead as planned even though the weather played havoc with the crowds. There was a great turn out which shows how supportive of CareFlight the communities of the southern shires of Sydney are. A highlight of the day was the first appearance of the CareFlight Rescue Simulator. Other attractions included the NRMA mobile membership truck; Rural Fire Service and NSW Fire Brigade displays; and Police, Ambulance and National Parks and Wildlife Service displays. There were also market stalls and stands set up by commercial organisations.
Despite the continual drenching rain at Tahmoor, we had a constant queue of children and parents who wanted to “ride” in the helicopter, play with the controls, hear the sounds and see the sights. The children were overwhelmed by the number of switches, gauges and props inside the cockpit, and couldn’t believe that they could touch and play with everything without getting into trouble! The parents were also interested to learn how CareFlight plays a major role in looking after people during emergencies, and a number showed an interest in supporting the organisation.
Unfortunately in the end the rain got the better of the crowd. At about 1.30pm most displays and stalls, including CareFlight, packed up their wet tents and produce and negotiated the boggy oval to head home. Congratulations and thanks to the organisers - despite the weather, the event was a great success.
The day started out sunny, with several people even commenting that they had checked the weather radar, and there was no sign of rain. But by the time the Tahmoor Community Day committee arrived for lunch, it was raining, and it kept up all day! However, despite the bleakness outside, all those inside the BK hangar were delighted when a cheque for $33,650 was presented by the committee to NRMA CareFlight. The hardworking people from the Tahmoor event committee are not only rainmakers; they are outstanding fundraisers as well! Congratulations to them all and to the people of the Wollondilly, Wingecarribee and Macarthur areas who supported this wonderful community day. It was great to see that during the lunch following the presentation there was lot of discussion on what was going to happen at the 2009 event, and what could be improved to raise even larger amounts for NRMA CareFlight.
