Medical Retrieval Service opens in Darwin

Chief Minister Clare Martin today welcomed a new aeromedical evacuation service to Darwin.

The Health Minister Chris Burns also attended the official launch of the Aspen Medical CareFlight service at Darwin Airport.

"Making Darwin a base for this service will mean organisations, including the Australian Defence Force, travel insurers and mining companies, can evacuate patients needing medical treatment from neighbouring countries," Ms Martin said.

"Aspen and CareFlight have internationally recognised reputations for helping repatriate Australian patients.

It's great to see such business innovators setting up in Darwin."

The Health Minister Chris Burns said the service provided by Aspen and CareFlight would complement the Health Department's aeromedical service.

"We already have a quality domestic evacuation operation and will now be covered internationally," he said.

"This new aeromedical service, coupled with the National Critical Care and Trauma Centre at RDH, further cements Darwin's reputation as a centre of quality medical care in the South-East Asian region."
