Injured woman flown from crash that led to nursing home evacuation (Camden)

An injured woman was flown to hospital following a car crash that caused a gas leak which sparked the partial evacuation of a nursing home at Camden, in Sydney’s outer south-west, this afternoon.

Emergency services evacuated part of the Carrington nursing home complex after the car veered off the road and hit a gas pipe near the intersection of Werombi and Smalls Roads.

NRMA CareFlight’s flying trauma team landed at the scene shortly before 1 pm, leaving the crew doctors and paramedic at the scene while the helicopter relocated to nearby Camden showground to be clear of the immediate area.

The NRMA CareFlight doctor said an 85-year-old woman was flown by NRMA CareFlight to Liverpool Hospital suffering fractured ribs, abdominal injuries and abrasions to her head and neck.

Another NRMA CareFlight doctor accompanied the woman’s husband, believed to be aged in his 80s, who was taken by road ambulance to Liverpool Hospital with minor injuries.

The couple are residents of the Carrington nursing home.

About the flying trauma team …

Quick response to seriously injured patients was what the NSW Government promised when it approved NRMA CareFlight’s trauma trial.

Backed by a $11.2 million grant from NRMA Insurance, a formal agreement with NSW Ambulance Service and approval from the State Government, the flying team is now also supported by the Motor Accidents Authority.

The trial, to demonstrate the benefit to patient recovery from having a specialist doctor support local ambulance officers in treating badly injured patients, including those with severe head injury, is keeping NRMA CareFlight in the air rushing to patients in not only the Central Coast but also to Greater Sydney, Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands from the charity’s base in the Westmead Hospitals’ campus.

Community fund-raising is allowing CareFlight to extend its flying squad response both geographically and soon, aided by new Night Vision Goggle technology, also to routine night landings.

Donors, or people wishing to nominate CareFlight as a recipient of their fundraising, are asked to contact the charity’s donation line on 1800 655 876 or visit the web site www.careflight.org
