Toddler revived after backyard pool near drowning (Caringbah)

A toddler remains in a critical condition in hospital after being found floating in a backyard swimming pool at Caringbah, in Sydney’s south, this afternoon.

Emergency teams including ambulance, police and NRMA CareFlight’s flying trauma team rushed to the Gannons Road house just after 3 pm.

The NRMA CareFlight doctor said a neighbour quickly started resuscitation when the 14-month-old girl was found floating face down in the pool.

Ambulance officers took over resuscitation and were assisted by the NRMA CareFlight doctor after police brought the trauma team from where they landed in a nearby industrial area.

After stabilisation at the scene the girl was placed on a ventilator to control her breathing and flown to the Sydney Children’s Hospital under full intensive care monitoring.

The toddler remained in a critical condition on arrival at the hospital at 4.20 pm.

About the flying trauma team …

Quick response to seriously injured patients was what the NSW Government promised when it approved NRMA CareFlight’s trauma trial.

Backed by a $11.2 million grant from NRMA Insurance, a formal agreement with NSW Ambulance Service and approval from the State Government, the flying team is now also supported by the Motor Accidents Authority.

The trial, to demonstrate the benefit to patient recovery from having a specialist doctor support local ambulance officers in treating badly injured patients, including those with severe head injury, is keeping NRMA CareFlight in the air rushing to patients in not only the Central Coast but also to Greater Sydney, Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands from the charity’s base in the Westmead Hospitals’ campus.

Community fund-raising is allowing CareFlight to extend its flying squad response both geographically and soon, aided by new Night Vision Goggle technology, also to routine night landings.

Donors, or people wishing to nominate CareFlight as a recipient of their fundraising, are asked to contact the charity’s donation line on 1800 655 876 or visit the web site www.careflight.org
