Marathon Blue Mountains gig boosts kids and care (Katoomba)

A marathon effort by Blue Mountains band the Remarkable Rockets has boosted support for the Westmead Children’s Hospital and NRMA CareFlight’s trauma service.

The marathon fundraiser ran for 12 hours in the Old City Bank Piano Bar at the Carrington Hotel in April.

Band leader and co-ordinator of the event, John Moran, worked tirelessly in the lead-up and said he was very pleased with the turn-out to see the marathon gig.

NRMA CareFlight representative, Don Kemble, who attended praised the support from the Upper Blue Mountains.

“It was great to see such good support from the community during this marathon gig,” Mr Kemble said, ”It is a credit to the band and the sponsors of the event, including the Carrington Hotel which donated a proportion of their takings from the day.”

Speaking to the crowd, Mr Kemble outlined how closely the trauma teams at the hospital and in the air needed to co-operate.

“It seems almost every week that our flying trauma team is called to one or two cases in Greater Sydney, including the Mountains where young people are treated on scene by our specialist doctor and then flown by NRMA CareFlight to the rooftop of the Children’s Hospital,” he said.

“It’s great to see such a fantastic event raise funds for these two worthy causes that work so closely together.”

NRMA CareFlight has also had a close relationship with the Blue Mountains over its 22-year history with many dramatic rescues taking place in and around the area.

In recent weeks the helicopter crews have been seen flying training missions into the Kedumba valley, near Katoomba, to practice and demonstrate the use of new Night Vision Goggle Technology which will aid dramatically in the search and rescue of injured or lost people in the area.

NRMA CareFlight thanks the Remarkable Rockets for their organisation of the marathon gig, as well as the sponsors of the event including The Carrington Hotel, Old City Bank Bar and Brassiere, Josepha’s Fine Chocolates, Explore Music, The Hattery, The Bass People, Colliers, Bennetts, Leura Whisk, Extreme Motorcycles, Jakeman’s Framing, Scott’s Auto One and Blue Mountains Hotel School.
