Ute driver freed after crash with garbage truck (Eastern Creek)

A driver had a narrow escape from death when his utility and a garbage truck collided head on at Eastern Creek in Sydney’s west this morning.

Emergency services rushed to the crash at Wallgrove Road just before 9 am.

The helicopter landed in a paddock adjacent to the crash.

An NRMA CareFlight trauma doctor worked with ambulance paramedics to treat the man as Fire Brigade rescue officers worked to free him.

The 4WD utility ended up on its side, pinning the man by his head and legs.

The NRMA CareFlight doctor said the driver of the utility, a Baulkham Hills man aged in his early 30s, suffered fractures to his right leg, arm and head injuries but remained conscious.

After the initial stabilisation the driver was taken by road ambulance, under continuing treatment by the NRMA CareFlight doctor, to Nepean Hospital where he was in a stable condition on arrival shortly after 10 am.

The doctor said had the man been in a smaller vehicle the impact probably would have killed him.
