An NRMA CareFlight trauma team flew through low cloud and rain to treat a bicycle rider who was left unconscious after he collided with a car near Bobbin Head in Sydney’s north today.
Emergency services were alerted to the man’s plight just after 11 am.
Because of tall trees on Bobbin Head Road where the rider collided with the car towing a boat, the helicopter landed in a clear area at a nearby boat ramp.
Ambulance paramedics drove the unconscious man to the waiting helicopter to allow the NRMA CareFlight doctor to place him on a ventilator under an induced coma to control his breathing.
The NRMA CareFlight doctor said the 54-year-old man, from West Wahroonga, suffered a closed head injury and abrasions.
After stabilisation the man was flown under full intensive care management to Royal North Shore Hospital where he remained in a critical condition on arrival.
