Two trauma doctors from NRMA CareFlight flew to inner city to treat a man who was critically injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the Sydney Harbour Bridge late today.
Up to five people were injured in the head-on crash just after 5 pm near the southern pylons of the bridge which caused traffic chaos.
A wedding group moved to the side of parkland to allow the NRMA CareFlight flying trauma team to land at Observatory Hill, beside the bridge.
The two doctors and duty ambulance paramedic joined emergency services treating the injured on the bridge.
The NRMA CareFlight doctors treated the most seriously injured, a 34-year-old man from Dee Why on Sydney’s northern beaches who was trapped in the wreckage of his car for some 45 minutes.
The doctors administered pain management which allowed the Police Rescue Squad officers to free the man who was initially rendered unconscious.
The man suffered chest, abdominal and pelvic injuries and a fractured left wrist.
The doctors continued treating the man as he was taken in a road ambulance to Royal North Shore Hospital where he was in a critical condition on arrival.
Ambulances took other patients with lesser injuries to city hospitals.
The wedding party continued their ceremony near the parked helicopter, with the landing causing only a slight interruption to proceedings.
