Injured trail biker flown from Hawkesbury quarry

An injured trail bike rider was flown to hospital from a quarry near the Hawkesbury River at Lower Portland, north-west of Sydney, today.

The man was riding with a friend when he fell from his bike and struck his head.

The friend called “000” and alerted ambulance officers shortly after midday.

An NRMA CareFlight trauma team landed in the quarry off Wheelbarrow Ridge Road just before 12.30 pm to treat the man.

The NRMA CareFlight doctor praised the efforts of the friend who prized the initially unconscious man’s mouth open to ensure an airway until the flying trauma team landed.

After stabilisation the man placed on board NRMA CareFlight under continuing treatment by the crew doctor and flown to Westmead Hospital where he remained in a stable condition on arrival at 1pm.
