CareFlight jet flying to last critical patient in Broome (W.A.)

Perth time

A CareFlight International Air Ambulance jet is flying from Perth to Broome to bring the final critical patient from yesterday’s refugee boat explosion back to hospital in Perth.

The jet, crewed by a CareFlight retrieval specialist doctor and intensive care nurse, is due to land at Broome at 3.15 pm.

The jet is equipped with one of CareFlight International’s mobile intensive care modules.

The flight is being undertaken to assist the Royal Flying Doctor Service with the transfer of patients from the Ashmore Reef incident to Perth for ongoing specialist treatment.

The patient is a man who already has been placed on a ventilator to control his breathing, so will require full intensive care monitoring by the CareFlight medical team.

Subject to turnaround time in Broome, and any further treatment which the patient may require, the jet is expected to arrive back at Perth airport at around 5 pm.

Overnight, the first of two patients from the incident were flown by CareFlight International Air Ambulance from Truscott Island to Darwin.

One of the men suffered burns to 80 per cent of his body and was in a critical condition while the other, suffering 20 per cent burns, was in a serious condition.

The Northern Territory Government activated the Darwin-base under its emergency response activation system.

CareFlight International Air Ambulance operates from bases in Perth, Darwin and Sydney.
