A Baulkham Hills man was pinned inside his car for almost two hours after he crashed off the Putty Road at Colo Heights north-west of Sydney at about 1.30 pm today.
Other motorists treated the man and his wife then used their cars to block traffic to allow NRMA CareFlight's trauma team to land on the isolated road.
The NRMA CareFlight doctor said the 75-year-old man was trapped with a tree wedged into the driver's door.
The man suffered head, chest and abdominal injuries and was briefly unconscious.
The man's wife was freed by the motorists who treated her minor injuries until the trauma helicopter landed.
A Hawkesbury SES rescue arrived to free the man, joined by Ambulance, Police and Rural Fire Service units.
The man was flown by NRMA CareFlight to Westmead Hospital where he remained in a serious but stable condition on arrival shortly after 4 pm, while the woman was taken by ambulance to hospital for observation.
