Medical teams treated the driver while he remained trapped for an hour in his car which collided with a garbage truck at Smithfield, in Sydney's south-west, today.
Ambulance, fire, police and an NRMA CareFlight trauma team rushed to the crash at Gipps Road shortly before 11 am.
The helicopter landed in a park 50 metres from the scene to allow the trauma doctor to team with ambulance paramedics in treating the man.
The NRMA CareFlight doctor said the 29-year-old man suffered multiple leg fractures and pelvic injuries when his car and the truck collided, then another car also hit the vehicle.
On release the CareFlight doctor continued to treat the man as he was taken in a road ambulance to Westmead Hospital where he remained in a serious but stable condition on arrival.
