A 29-year-old man has been flown to hospital after he was bitten by a snake overnight at a remote station between Kalkarindji and the Western Australian border.
The station worker was sleeping in his swag when he was reportedly bitten by a large snake, its species not immediately known.
CareFlight, operating the Top End Medical Retrieval Service on behalf of the Northern Territory Government, tasked a fixed wing turbo-prop aircraft at first light to fly to help the man.
Station staff were praised by CareFlight’s team for carrying out best practice first aid, including using a compression bandage and keeping the patient calm until medical help arrived.
After landing at the station’s airstrip, CareFlight’s flight nurse assessed the man and provided additional treatment at the scene.
Care continued aboard the aircraft as the man was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition.
