A man and a woman driving on the Great Western Highway, Springwood, were injured after their car crashed into a tree earlier today.
Both individuals aged in their 70s sustained suspected internal bleeding and the woman had abdominal injuries from the impact.
CareFlight’s Rapid Response Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance at 2:10pm and landed 10 minutes later in Lomatia Park. NSW Police escorted CareFlight’s clinical team to the scene of the incident where NSW Ambulance paramedics were providing initial treatment and Fire and Rescue NSW personnel were extricating the couple.
CareFlight’s specialist doctor and NSW Ambulance critical care paramedic performed a clinical assessment on the woman, including an ultrasound and administered pain relief. A roadside blood transfusion was also performed on her.
CareFlight’s clinical team also conducted a clinical assessment on the man before he was transported by road with NSW Ambulance paramedics to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition.
As the woman’s condition was more critical, she was airlifted by CareFlight to Westmead Hospital under ongoing treatment from CareFlight’s clinical team.
