A dirt bike racer suffered a serious leg injury on a remote bush track west of Newcastle this afternoon.

CareFlight’s rapid response rescue helicopter was tasked to the track at Olney, on the edge of Watagan National Park, shortly after 4pm.

The male rider, 35, had crashed and was speared along the length of his thigh by small branch.

NSW Ambulance crews were on the scene and provided initial treatment before transferring the man to the CareFlight helicopter.

CareFlight’s specialist doctor and critical care paramedic provided further treatment before he was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney in a stable condition.
