A 53-year-old man was airlifted to hospital this afternoon after being attacked by a buffalo near Jabiru this morning.

The man, who was visiting from interstate, was reportedly charged while taking photos.

The buffalo’s horn penetrated the man’s arm, causing the heavy loss of blood and serious pain.

The man’s companions on the remote property, and then medical staff from the Jabiru clinic, provided initial treatment and stabilised his injuries.

A CareFlight turbo-prop aeroplane and medical team was despatched to the local Jabiru landing strip and retrieved the patient.

He was transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition by early afternoon for further treatment.

CareFlight operates the Top End Medical Retrieval Service on behalf of the NT Government.
