Medical teams rushed to treat two men who suffered serious injuries when their utility rolled and crashed into a ditch near Daly River Mission, south of Darwin late this afternoon.
Nurses from the Daly River Mission health clinic rushed to the crash and called Darwin’s CareFlight TIO Rescue Helicopter to fly 150 km to the scene.
The nurses found a 20-year-old man trapped in the ute while a 17-year-old managed to climb free.
As the clinic nurses combined with the CareFlight doctor and nurse to stabilise the trapped man, volunteers from the NT Emergency Services used the “jaws of life” to cut him free.
The freed man suffered a fractured leg and head injuries while the youth suffered serious facial injuries.
Both remained conscious and were stabilised and sedated as they were flown to Royal Darwin Hospital on the CareFlight TIO Rescue Helicopter.
They remained in a stable condition on arrival at the hospital shortly after 7 pm.
The helicopter crew praised the efforts of clinic nurses, police and the NTES volunteers in quickly treating the seriously injured men.
