A 17-year-old boy has been airlifted to Darwin in a stable condition after he was bitten by a shark off Groote Eylandt yesterday afternoon.
The boy was bitten on the leg by what was suspected to be a bull shark, suffering wounds around the knee.
CareFlight, operating the Top End Medical Retrieval Service on behalf of the Northern Territory Government, tasked a fixed wing aeroplane to the island shortly after 5.30pm.
The boy received initial treatment on the island by health centre staff. He was then transferred by road about 40 minute drive from the scene of the incident to the Alyangula Health Centre.
CareFlight’s flight nurse provided further treatment to the boy while on the island and in the air as the teenager was airlifted to Darwin.
The boy was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition.
