A 33-year-old woman has been flown to Royal Darwin Hospital after she was injured whilst hiking at Koolpin Gorge in Kakadu National Park shortly before 1pm this afternoon.
The woman was visiting Darwin from overseas and was walking with her partner when she slipped and injured her back.
The couple alerted authorities with their satellite phone, and CareFlight’s NT Rescue Helicopter was tasked to the area.
CareFlight’s flight nurse and doctor were winched down to assess the patient and provide treatment, while the pilot and aircrew officer flew to land on a rock surface nearby.
The helicopter flew back overhead and the patient was loaded onto a stretcher before being winched into the helicopter.
She was flown to Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition.
CareFlight praised the pair for their organisation and having a satellite navigation device which allowed the rescue helicopter to quickly pinpoint their location.
