A 36-year-old man was trapped in his vehicle for almost an hour following a collision with a tree north-west of Sydney this afternoon.

A front seat passenger who sustained a dislocated shoulder managed to clamber free through the window following the accident on Old Stock Route Road in Oakville. He lay down beside the road until help arrived.

CareFlight’s rapid response rescue helicopter was called just after 1pm, landing directly across the road about 100 metres from the scene.

As NSW Fire & Rescue worked to free the driver, CareFlight’s specialist doctor and intensive care paramedic assisted the man, who had suffered head and chest injuries.

After he was freed, the driver was airlifted to Westmead in stable condition.

The passenger, a 28-year-old male, had also suffered head and neck injuries and was taken by road by NSW Ambulance to Westmead hospital in a stable condition.
