A woman in her 40s has been flown to hospital in a stable condition after she was struck in the head by a surfboard in waves at Umina Beach this afternoon.

Bystanders pulled the woman from the surf and were able to get her safely ashore.

CareFlight’s rapid response rescue helicopter was tasked shortly before 12.30pm, landing in an oval next to the beach.

NSW Ambulance paramedics provided initial treatment to the woman on the beach and were quickly joined by CareFlight’s team.

CareFlight’s specialist doctor and critical care paramedic provided further treatment at the scene for head and potential spinal injuries.

The woman was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.
