A 30-year-old man has been airlifted to hospital in a stable condition after suffering burns to his arms and face during an explosion at Smithfield this morning.

The man was reportedly refilling a diesel engine water compressor when it exploded.

CareFlight’s rapid response rescue helicopter was tasked to the area just after 10am, landing near the scene of the accident at Smithfield Park.

Ambulance paramedics transported the patient from the scene to the CareFlight helicopter.

CareFlight’s critical care doctor and paramedic provided treatment for the patient’s burns, and he was then flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.

Police and fire crews also attended.
