A 44-year-old man is in a critical condition after suffering severe burns at a workplace in Blacktown this afternoon.

It is understood the man was welding at the automotive workplace when a gas bottle exploded, leaving the man with burns to 50 to 60 per cent of his body.

CareFlight’s rapid response helicopter was tasked just after 4.30pm to Blacktown, landing a short time later at a park.

Conveyed to the scene by police, CareFlight’s specialist doctor and critical care paramedic assessed and treatment the man, intubating him to stabilise his condition.

The man was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.

Ambulance and Fire and Rescue crews were also on scene providing assistance.
