Two patients have been flown to hospital after a multi-agency emergency response to a car crash on the Arnhem Highway in Kakadu this morning.
The rescue took a coordinated effort over several hours from responders, including Jabiru health clinic staff, Kakadu Rangers, Police, Fire and Emergency Services, St John Ambulance and CareFlight.
A 19-year-old man was trapped in the vehicle after it rolled shortly before 8.00am. He was initially cared for by an off duty ranger, then treated by staff from the Jabiru health clinic and St John Ambulance road crews, with Police, Fire and Emergency crews working to safely free the man.
CareFlight, operating the Top End Medical Retrieval Service on behalf of the Northern Territory Government, tasked the Top End Rescue Helicopter shortly before 9am and it landed at the scene on the highway about 40km West of South Alligator River.
CareFlight’s specialist doctor and flight nurse provided additional treatment for the man at the scene.
A female passenger, who had been able to free herself, was assessed for minor injuries.
The aeromedical team provided ongoing care for the man as he was flown to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition. The woman was also flown to hospital in a stable condition.
