A 55-year-old man was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition, and his wife in a critical condition, after a head-on collision in Lucas Heights this afternoon.
CareFlight’s rapid response rescue helicopter was tasked to New Illawarra Road shortly after 5.30pm, landing on the road at the scene.
The man was driving a ute with his wife in the passenger seat when it was involved in a collision with a sedan.
CareFlight’s specialist doctor and critical care paramedic treated the man at the scene for chest and leg injuries.
The CareFlight medical crew worked with an Ambulance medical team to treat the woman, stabilising her at the scene prior to onward road transport to Liverpool Hospital.
It’s understood passengers from the second vehicle were injured and treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken by road to Liverpool Hospital.
Fire & Rescue and Rural Fire Service crews were also on scene.
