A collapsed man was rescued from a popular bushwalking track in Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park this afternoon.
The bushwalking group raised the alarm via satellite phone after the man became dehydrated and collapsed. Park Rangers at the park’s headquarters helped coordinate the efforts of the CareFlight rescue helicopter rescue crew who were able to land directly at the scene.
The CareFlight crew said the group were particularly well prepared and did all the right things to assist the ill man. They had plenty of water and were keeping the man cool after administering initial first aid. They praised the group’s efforts in raising the alarm and preparing for the arrival of the CareFlight rescue helicopter. The group were equipped with high-visibility clothing and other rescue equipment that easily alerted the CareFlight team to their location on the ground. Local helicopter tour operators were also praised for their assistance by staying clear of the area.
The man is now in a stable condition and is being treated while he is flown to Royal Darwin Hospital for ongoing care.
