STRETCHER BRIDGE

CareFlight pioneered the concept of the critical care stretcher bridge, an ingenious mobile intensive care unit. The unit allows medical equipment to be as accessible and effective in the confined space of a helicopter as it is in a hospital.  This simple idea has been adopted in aeromedicine worldwide.

ECMO

CareFlight was the first Australian aeromedical organisation to perform extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) procedures in a retrieval setting.  The procedure involves the use of a ‘heart lung machine’ which keeps patients alive with blood oxygenated outside the body.

NIGHT VISION GOOGLES

CareFlight introduced night vision goggle (NVG) technology for civilian aeromedical and emergency helicopter operations. We obtained all the necessary approvals and accreditations, paving the way for other such services to become 24 hour operations.

HEAD INJURY TRIAL

The Head Injury Retrieval Trial (HIRT) tested whether delivering specialist doctors to trauma scenes very quickly would improve survival and recovery rates for patients with severe head injuries.  Several aspects of this model of care have become benchmarks for rescue services everywhere.

TOP END MEDICAL RETRIEVAL SERVICE

CareFlight Darwin is Australia’s only fully integrated aeromedical service. Doctors, nurses and aviation, engineering and support staff work together as one team, at a single base, across all fixed wing and helicopter operations.
